After suffering a very severe personal crisis and subsequently dropping out of the scene, I am back... and so is Spectrum Games. For the last month or so, I've been hard at work on CAH: Season 2. I didn't want to announce the come-back until I was absolutely sure that the crisis wouldn't return, so I waited until now.

I can say without hesitation that CAH: S2 is a far superior game to S1. While it's still the same game at its core, a lot has been changed or entirely re-written from scratch, making it a leaner, meaner retro-toon RPG. All the stuff that made CAH so unique is still in place, yet the game has been streamlined so that it plays faster and emulates the retro-toons better. I would like to give you a quick rundown of some of the changes/features:

  • Character creation has been almost completely revamped. It's much quicker now, thanks to the fact that the book-keeping has been minimized and chart-consulting has been eliminated. A beginner can now easily create a CAH character in 30 minutes or less.

  • Action Features (formerly called Special Abilities) are still created by the player, but they are all given a standard rating (just like Traits). Each category (Attack Action Features, Defense Action Features, etc.) has its own Qualities that you can figure up based on the rating. For example, Defense Action Features have the "Protection" Quality, which is equal to the rating divided by 2 (rounding up). In a nutshell, you now decide what you want the AF to do, buy a rating for it, and slap on any Modifiers that you want it to have. No more wading through a bunch of components to build the AF the way you want it.

  • Combat has also been heavily retooled. In preparing for CAH:S2, I watched hours upon hours of retro-toons, making notes regarding how many attacks each combat scene usually had, how many "rounds" the combat scenes lasted, and so forth. My studies directly impacted how I revised the combat rules. As a result, combat is a lot faster and it more accurately reflects the combat sequences depicted in the cartoons of yesteryear.

  • A lot of new aspects have been added to the game as well: rules for commercial breaks, "cleverness" combat" (where characters can use their cunning and trickery to cause damage), optional scene-based combat rules, and much more.

  • Plus, Kargorr gets some company. His old nemesis, the heroic Bravesteel, joins in on the fun.

  • On the production end of things, the CAH:S2 rulebook will be the sharpest looking CAH product yet. Not only does every piece of art simply ooze the retro-toon vibe, but it's all going to be presented to you in glorious full-color. Add to that the fact that I will be handling the graphic design entirely by myself (I've gone to college for just this purpose), so I can guarantee that the page layout will be both very functional and capture the feel of the source material with absolute zeal.

We are currently hoping for a GenCon release.

I'll admit, I am certainly interested in picking this game off the shelves of my FLGS when it comes out. I hope it does live up to the hype. So far, however, it looks very good.
